Spiritual Activism is an Inside Job

Nothing is the same and that’s okay. The past 18+ months have forever changed the world. We are entering the fallout from this time, a period of global PTSD which will impact every being on the planet. We have acknowledged the first anniversary of a racial reckoning in the US that started in 1863. Climate change scientists and activists are telling us we may be too late to save the planet. Millions of us are mourning the loss of loved ones, friends, colleagues and neighbors from a pandemic that is still here. And all over the world a divide is growing over what is ‘truth’. Many of us feel helpless and isolated. It may feel like a dark time. In some ways it is a dark time. But beyond the darkness there is hope. It IS possible to turn the page. The fact that we are still here on this planet means that survival is possible. We can thrive. To do this we must embrace interdependence. Interconnectedness is our guidepost. We may be fooled into thinking that connection and change is impossible because of society’s obsession with external distractions, exceptionalism and the cult of celebrity. Only special people can capture the attention of the masses, build bridges across communities and causes that may seem to have cross purposes. That’s not true. Each of us has the opportunity to participate in changing the world when we examine the relationship we have with ourselves. To engage in spiritual citizenship is to explore unfamiliar aspects of ourselves and meet those parts with tenderness and care. Spiritual bypassing passing has become so woven into our existence that when confronted with the very walls we need to tear down we forcefully jump over them and smile thinking we have done the work. The wall is work and spiritual practice is the tool that will knock it down, brick by brick.
